Two Weeks Worth of Review In One Post

Where did the time go? Somehow the last couple of weeks have blended into one long review of what has been happening in Library M edia, so here it goes….

Kindergarten had some wonderful stories read to them over the past two weeks. The Giant Carrot was an introduction the genre of Tall Tales. We talked about how often a story can be passed around and each time it is told the details become more and more unbelievable. Can I keep Him by Stephen Kellogg was a great book for noticing patterns in the illustrations, as well as, patterns in the text. Pinkerton Behave also by Stephen Kellogg was a brain test story. As the children listened to the story near the end I asked them to recall a part of the story and how this story might end using the text patterns.

1st graders were introduced to yet two more of their favorite authors. Norman Birdwell is the creator of the ever popular Clifford the Big Red Dog books. They were also introduced to David Shannon the creator of the No David books, as well as, many other great books. We reviewed how to locate a book from the "Everybody" section by a random letter assigned to each child. We introduced the concept of Cause and Effect in relationship to the No David book by David Shannon. (Some 1st graders missed these lessons due to field trips)

2nd graders watched a video on Norman Birdwell, as Clifford books are still very popular at this age. We followed-up the video with reading a couple of the Clifford books that were highlighted in the video interview. We talked about Animal Fantasy and watched for ways that it was brought out in the story Berloza the Bear by Jan Brett. Beatrice’s Goat by ……and A Bad Case Of Stripes by David Shannon were the books read that gave us a chance to again visit the topic of Diversity. 2nd graders were locating books in the nonfiction section by first the 100 ’s divisions then by specific book number and title. Though number and title was much more of a challenge, many students rose to the occasion and the smiles were very big with their success at locating the book assign to them. 2nd graders were also sent into the Fiction section to locate authors as well by the random letter assigned. This was very successful with all 2nd graders.

3rd, 4th and 5th graders were introduced to the genre of Tall Tales and what are the elements of a Tall Tale. We also worked on the skill of writing captions and what should be included in a caption. These students were also put to the test of locating both non-fiction books by specific call number and random fiction authors. We reviewed how the call number is located on the spine of a book and what a call number looks like for a fiction books as students created pretend spine labels for fiction books.

All in all it was a very busy time of learning in library media the last two weeks.

My Eye Are Red Today

My eyes are red today from staying up late last night just to finish my latest favorite book. Rescue Josh McGuire by Ben Mikaelsen was a GREAT read. I am sure you will enjoy this new book I purchased for the library. Come by and check-out this realistic fiction book full of action and adventure.

Athors, Authors and More Authors

Last week many of our students were exposed to several different authors via the use of recorded interviews. It is very costly to have authors come in person to the school, so I was thrilled to be able to secure DVDs and videos through other schools.

1st and 2nd graders got the chance to meet author Bill Peet, Stephen Kellogg and Norman Bridwell via videos.

3rd graders worked on map skills and learned about Jargon.

4th graders continued learning about Plagiarism and how to create citations on the online program by the Oregon State Library Information System (OLSIS)

C-5, C-6, M-1 and M-2 got to hear from the author Ben Mikaelsen How to Get to the Heart of the Story. In this 1 hour DVD students heard Mr. Mikaelsen tell how he came up with the ideas for several of his books. It was my privilege to hear Mr. Mikaelsen speak in person last year at Waldo Middle schoo. I was told that the author visit cost $1800.00, so I feel blessed to have been able to show our students this wonderful author for free with the help of the Waldo Library Media teacher.

We are also continuing to help students catch up with work they have missed due to being absent. We are also checking to see how well each grade level can locate Everybody, Fiction and Nonfiction books in the Library with all the skills they have been taught throughout the year.

Another Childhood Favorite

Another childhood favorite for me was the Walter Farley series. I recall reading the Black Stallion and being hooked. Since I loved horses (as I've already confessed) and since this author did series books it was great. Don't you love it when you find an author and they have written several books and there is no question what you will read next when you finish the current book you are reading by that author. Oh ya! Well, Walter Farley books are so great that even though they were written back in 1940's (that's before most of your parents were even born!) they are great reads still today. Check-out all the Walter Farley Black Stallion books we have on the shelf and let me know what you think.

What's New In Library This Week

Last week in Kindergarten we watched two classic stories on video, courtesy of United Streaming. We watched Make Way for the Duckling by Robert McCloskey, which is a Caldecott Award book and Rosie’s Walk by Pat

Some classes were treated to watch an interview with one of my favorite authors Jan Brett. I got the privilege of meeting Jan Brett last year when she was on tour through Oregon. It was a joy to meet her. Jan Brett is both a talented author, as well as, an illustrator. Our students were treated to watching Jan draw an elephant and they tried their hand at following along with her testing their illustrating skills. We had some great looking elephants from our young artists. We also watched Jan Brett draw a lion, but we gave our hands a rest during that lesson.

We discussed what realistic fiction is with the second graders in B-1 and B-2. Be sure to ask your child how the word realistic can be combined with the word fiction.

The other authors that some students learned about through a video visit were Bill Peet and Louis Sachar. Bill Peet, prior to being a children’s author, worked for a very famous Californian. Ask your student if they know who Bill Peet worked for prior to writing books.

Louis Sachar is best known for his award winning book Holes, but many of our students are also familiar with his Wayside School and Marvin Redpost books.

With our 3rd and 4th graders we talked about the genera Fairy Tales. We discussed the eight elements often found in Fairy Tales. See how many of these elements your child can recall from our lesson.

With the upper grades we continued to talk about the word “plagiarism” and how it affects our reporting skills both now and in the many years of school ahead of them.

We have completed our work on guide words and thesaurus. Our lab time has been cut due to the ELPA testing of students, but we will fill our Library Media time with author study and other areas of library skills.

A Book From My Childhood

Last week as I was shelving books I ran across a book that I was able to get last year as a donation to our library. I had forgotten how excited I was to see this book from my childhood. Baby Island by Carol Ryrie Brink is one of the few books that I recall from my childhood as being a favorite. In this book twelve-year-old Mary Wallace and her ten-year-old sister Jean survive the wreck of an ocean liner on its way to Australia and manage to make it to a seemingly deserted island in a lifeboat with four babies. You might want to check it out if this brief descriptions sounds good to you. The copy we have had the older looking cover that I remember from my childhood but I am sure if you will enjoy the insides just as well no matter what the cover looks like.

This Weekends Reading

This weekend I finished my third Betsy Byars book. I recently read The SOS Files as this book was one of the Beverly Cleary Award Nominees. Last month it was awarded the 2007 Clearly Award. This weekend I finished The TV Kid. These books were great books that keep me interested until the end and I am sure many of my readers will like anyone of these books.

The SOS Files is a collection of short stories written by the students in Mr. Magro's class. Each story is a tale of that students call for help at the time of their biggest emergency, thus the title The SOS Files.

The TV Kid is an adventure book about a boy who loves TV. The only other better activity besides TV is his secret explorations that lead him into painful trouble. I can't tell you any more without giving away the adventure. You'll just have to read it yourself.

You might also like another book by this same author that I read last year. The book Tornado follows a family in a storm cellar as they wait out a tornado and listen the stories of a farmhand about his boyhood dog named Tornado.

I Always Wanted A Horse

I always wanted a horse when I was growing up but, of course we couldn't keep a horse in our backyard so the answer was always the same when I asked for a horse, N0! So the next best thing is, of course, a good horse story right.

For those wanting a shorter book I would recommend the Pony Pals books by Jeanne Betancourt. There is a whole series of wonderful books with the leading character being a horse.

My other suggestion is the Saddles, Stars and Stripes books by Deborah Kent. Last night I finished the book Chance of a Lifetime and found it to be the next best thing to sitting in the saddle myself. This historical fiction book was very interesting with the setting taking place during a very difficult time in our Country's history, the Civil War.

Happy Trails!
